The Tall Ships are coming, the Tall Ships are coming! Enjoy scenic Newport Harbor, view the majesty, and experience first-hand Newport’s rich maritime heritage with a Tall Ships cruise.
Ocean State Tall Ships Festival 2012 returns to Rhode Island this summer. The city of Newport will be an official host port for the Tall Ships Challenge Series on the Atlantic coast from July 5-9th. Newport, Rhode Island has a long history hosting the Tall Ships. This year marks the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812, a defining event in the national history of the United States and Canada.
While the Tall Ships are in port, dates will be reserved exclusively for cruises to view the Tall Ships. Each day, the RI tour boat “Snappa” will offer RI Tall Ship sightseeing cruises, fully narrated by the Captain and crew. You’ll hear a detailed description of the ship’s structure and crew, its history, and other unique points of interest.
On July 5th, the day before the official festival begins, the ships will be arriving in port. Two 5 hour trips are scheduled for this day. Starting at 7:30 AM, our first cruise ventures outside of Narragansett Bay with hopes of seeing the first ship on the horizon. Due to the absence of sightseeing boats, the Captain can focus on the ships arriving under full sails without distraction. We encourage photographers to reserve this day to capture many photographic angles of the ships under full sail.
The Parade of Sails will take place on July 9th. The Tall Ships under full sail is a sight to behold. Their route will travel north, passing beneath the Newport Bridge and eventually heading south to leave Narragansett Bay. Don’t miss this once-in-a life-time event.
